Kaltura and Blackboard: Improving Learning Results with Video and Mobile (Case Study)

by Grenville.Gooder

Kaltura’s partnership with Blackboard, which was expanded today, is at the crux of our Education strategy.  Blackboard has been a pioneer in educational technology, helping thousands of institutions with teaching and learning. More and more this experience includes the incorporation of video and rich media assets.  Kaltura’s goal is to make the experience for faculty and students seamless. Video wasn’t always this accessible to Blackboard users, As you can learn from the video below, in the past video was often managed as a “silo”, in a separate stand-alone system.  Instructors would go to one system to upload and manage content, and then grab an embed code to add video to the appropriate web page or course.  At the very least, this was an inconvenient workflow; in a worst case scenario, this could be time consuming and problematic for the instructor, who essentially need to QA every posted video.

Kaltura’s Building Block for Blackboard, removes these manual steps from the process of assigning videos to various courses, assignments and pages.  At a high level the Kaltura services becomes subordinate to Blackboard, and allows all editorial actions to be performed within Blackboard.  The faculty and/or students never have to go into another system.  Specifically, this done leveraging Kaltura’s read and write REST based API’s.  Essentially all content can be pushed into Blackboard programmatically, and any Blackboard specific data can be synched back to the Kaltura system automatically. The result…a seamless experience for faculty and students!

Since the companies first partnered in 2011, more than 200 educational institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia have signed up to use the Building Block.

Another area where both Blackboard and Kaltura have made deep investments is around mobile support.  Not only are there multiple mobile operating systems (iOS, Android, Windows, etc.), but it seems like every day a new smartphone and tablet are coming on the market.  Again the expectation from both faculty and students that the content will “just work” no matter the device.  As such, Kaltura has made considerable investments to facilitate our mobile playback and that is completely compatible with Blackboard mobile.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

There are a number other significant enhancements in the Falcon release of our Blackboard Building Block, and even more coming in our upcoming November release.  One feature of particular note is a new “End-User Analytics” feature, that will allow for specific reporting on individual users.  Our hope being that this will provide a much more granular understanding of engagement by students can improve retention and outcomes. If you would like to learn more please feel free to contact the Kaltura EDU team and we will provide an update on the latest and greatest.
